San Antonio FC (11-6-7) earned their first ever victory in Sacramento, defeating Sacramento Republic FC (6-9-8) 1-0 on Saturday night, giving them nine points in their three-match cross country road trip. A man of the match performance from on-loan defender Kortne Ford helped lead the Alamo City club to victory.

“Sacramento is a strong opponent, and they have a lot of quality players,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “Fans here were very loud. You can feel the passion from the fans that helped the home team. Having said that, I thought our guys were resilient. We created a number of good opportunities that we should have done a bit better with, but the guys kept going and we got rewarded with a goal.”

Sacramento and SAFC ended the first half at 0-0 after both teams continued to try and find a footing in the game. San Antonio had the best chance of the first 45 minutes when a backheel from Nathan found Jose Gallegos who put his shot just wide of the far post.

SAFC came out of the gates in the second half looking for the opener but wouldn’t find it until the 74th minute. After a great run down the right flank, Epps chipped in a back post ball that Ford headed into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. San Antonio FC (10-6-7) earned their second consecutive road win, defeating the New York Red Bulls II (4-15-4) 2-1 on Wednesday night. A stellar goal from Jose Gallegos along with a Red Bulls II own goal helped pave the way for the three points.

“The Red Bulls are a high pressing very aggressive team, and so are we,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “It’s two teams that are the aggressors with and without the ball. But our guys demonstrated resilience and were able to close the game a man down, so I’m incredibly proud of the guys in the locker room.”

After a furious start from the Red Bulls II that forced a brilliant save from Matthew Cardone, SAFC eventually were the first to strike in the 33rd minute. After midfielder Cam Lindley recovered the ball in midfield, his deflected pass found Gallegos who turned on the jets to steam past the defender and finish nicely into the bottom corner for the 1-0 lead. The Alamo City club entered halftime with the one goal lead before quickly doubling it at the start of the second half. A PC corner kick nearly found the head of Justin Dhillon before goalkeeper Samuel Joseph accidentally turned the ball into his own net.

After Mohammed Abu was sent off due to a second yellow card, Red Bulls II immediately capitalized and cut the lead in half in the 55th minute. However, SAFC would defend well and hold onto the lead to earn the road win in New Jersey.

SAFC will now head to Sacramento to take on Republic FC this Saturday, September 18 in what will be the final match of the team’s four-game road trip.

San Antonio FC has loaned defender Liam Doyle to Indy Eleven in the USL Championship pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per team policy, terms of the loan were not disclosed.  

Doyle originally joined SAFC in the latter part of the 2020 season before appearing in the club’s lone playoff match against New Mexico United that year. This season, Doyle appeared in 13 regular season matches (977 minutes) with SAFC.

Following the loan, the SAFC roster currently stands at 26.

A goal from Marcus Epps and a stellar team defensive performance helped earn all three points in a match that saw goalkeeper Matthew Cardone become the all-time appearance leader for SAFC.

We knew at some point it was just a matter of time and Marcus [Epps] delivered a spectacular goal for the team.”

Despite the 0-0 score at halftime, SAFC created a number of chances in the first 45 minutes. Nathan, Epps and Gallegos all created dangerous chances but were unable to find the breakthrough. To start the second half, SAFC continued its dominance and forced a number of saves by the Monarchs keeper. Eventually, Epps received a pass from PC before dribbling past two players and scoring a beautiful strike off the underside of the crossbar from outside the 18-yard box.

The goal was Epps’ fifth of the season and third in his last five matches, while PC recorded his second assist of the season to go with a team-high four key passes. Cardone’s appearance was his 103rd in all competitions with SAFC, passing Greg Cochrane for the club lead.

SAFC will now travel across the country to face the New York Red Bulls II on Wednesday before heading back west to face Sacramento next Saturday.

Justin Dhillon’s fifth goal of the season wasn’t enough for the Alamo City club to get a win in the first of the upcoming four-game road trip.

“It’s a disappointing result,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “We have to do better in our individual duels. We gave up a couple goals that we shouldn’t be giving up and we also created a number of opportunities that we have to do a better job finishing. Credit to Austin, they made it very difficult and found a way to win the game.”

San Antonio FC (8-5-7) ended Saturday’s match even with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (13-6-5) as the two sides earned a point each after a 1-1 score line. SAFC forward Nathan scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season, but Pittsburgh scored a late equalizer to end the game level.

“Obviously, Pittsburgh is a very good team, they are number one in their conference,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “But, I felt we were the better team. We showed it on the field. Yes, we should have done a better job managing the late minutes. Game management is something we take away as something to improve on. Credit to them their finish was a great finish.”

“We played two number one teams and collected seven points in the last three matches, and that’s pretty good."

Despite the score being level at halftime, SAFC controlled the first 45 minutes, creating a number of chances that just didn’t find the back of the net. The Alamo City club would get a golden opportunity at the beginning of the second half when it earned a penalty from a Riverhounds handball in the box. Nathan stepped up but sent his shot over the bar in what was a break for Pittsburgh. In the 64th minute however, Nathan wouldn’t be denied. A wonderful chipped pass from Marcus Epps found the head of the Brazilian who snuck his header just inside the near post for the 1-0 lead.

San Antonio was able to control the flow of the game and almost doubled their lead a few times in the second half. However, the Riverhounds would capitalize on the final chance of the match when Alex Dixon headed a powerful ball past Cardone in the 90th minute. With the draw, SAFC recorded seven points over the three-game homestand which added to their 19 points in their last nine matches.

Midfielder Jose Gallegos was named the SWBC Man of the Match after he recorded two key passes, three shots, five successful dribbles and a 92 percent passing accuracy. SAFC will now embark on a four-game road trip starting with a quick turnaround in Austin this Tuesday.

San Antonio FC (8-5-6) defeated Real Monarchs SLC (4-12-4) 3-2 on Wednesday night to earn the club’s sixth win in their last eight matches. SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone became the second player in club history to reach 100 appearances in all competitions and Kortne Ford scored his first goal for the club to help bring home the three points.

“Matt is a great example for all aspiring players,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “His 100th game for the club is an incredible milestone and we are incredibly proud of him.

“We definitely controlled the game. We made it difficult on ourselves with the amount of opportunities we created; you have to put them in the back of the net. Guys earned the three points, but unfortunately, we didn’t execute at the level we would have liked. At the same time, I’m proud of the guys. Its back-to-back wins which is not easy to do in this conference.”

Despite the San Antonio native Cardone featuring in the spotlight in his 100th match, it was another Alamo City native who would get SAFC off and running in the match. Midfielder Jose Gallegos picked up one of Chris Lema’s four key passes on the night and smartly turned in the box to finish with his left foot in the 27th minute. SAFC conceded early in the second half but got the lead right back in the 75th minute when Ford capitalized on a loose ball in the box and side-footed it calmly into the back of the net for the 2-1 lead. SAFC got its third when Marcus Epps’s deflected strike in the 79th minute looped into the empty net. Despite a late own goal by SAFC, the club would go on to win its third straight match.

Cardone follows Greg Cochrane as the only two players to appear in at least 100 matches for the club. The goalkeeper will match Cochrane with two more games played and can pass him on Sept. 11 at Real Monarchs SLC. Along with his club-record 96 regular season games, Cardone has appeared in three Open Cup matches and one USL playoff match. The MacArthur and Trinity alum originally made his SAFC debut on May 7, 2016, against RGVFC.

San Antonio FC (7-5-6) defeated the first place El Paso Locomotive (12-1-5) 2-1 on Saturday night at Toyota Field after a stoppage time winner from forward Justin Dhillon. A goal from Marcus Epps helped Dhillon and the team seal the three points in the first match for the club since August 8.

“I’m just so proud of the guys,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “With what we have had to endure the last few weeks it’s been incredibly difficult. We preach resilience and that’s what the guys showed tonight. They did everything they could on the field. They battled, they fought, and they earned the three points.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the first half when a pass from Jose Gallegos set Epps free down the left hand side. The Mississippi-born midfielder was denied a penalty claim just seconds earlier before he dribbled at a Locomotive defender and calmly slotted the ball into the far post to give the home side the lead. The teams reached halftime with the score still 1-0 in favor of SAFC, but El Paso started brightly in the second half and was able to equalize from a corner kick. Nick Ross’ corner found the head of Sebastian Velasquez who was able to tie the game.

Both sides were searching for a winner in the second half, but it was SAFC who would take the points after an incredible solo effort from Dhillon. A long ball from defender Jasser Khmiri was taken down wonderfully by the forward before he dribbled and went past three El Paso defenders. Dhillon then rifled a shot into the bottom corner in stoppage time to seal the victory and send the fans into pandemonium.
