San Antonio FC midfielder Rafa Castillo has been named to the USL Team of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced today. Castillo played pivotal roles in both SAFC wins last week, including a game-winning goal against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Saturday.
Castillo was previously named to the USL Team of the Week for his performance against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on April 30, and the Team of the Week Bench after the July 16 clash with Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. Castillo is currently tied for the team lead in goals this season with four.
Along with Castillo, SAFC forward Cesar Elizondo and goalkeeper Matt Cardone were recognized by being named to the USL Team of the Week Bench. Elizondo scored a goal and recorded an assist vs. Arizona United SC on Aug. 17, while Cardone kept one clean sheet and made a combined seven saves against Arizona and Seattle last week.
Castillo has now started 21 USL games for San Antonio this season, playing in 1,810 minutes and captaining the side five times. Elizondo has scored two goals and recorded one assist in 510 minutes since joining the team on July 11. The San Antonio native Cardone has now started six USL matches including the last two after starting goalkeeper Josh Ford suffered a season ending injury prior to the Aug. 17 match vs. Arizona.
Castillo’s inclusion marks the eighth time SAFC has had a representative in the USL Team of the Week and the first since Greg Cochrane following the match against OKC Energy FC on July 9.
