SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC has signed Jamaican international striker Jason Johnson for the upcoming 2016 USL season, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Johnson joins SAFC from the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer (MLS) where he spent the majority of the 2015 season, making 20 appearances and scoring two goals. Johnson, a Generation Adidas player, was originally selected by the Houston Dynamo (MLS) in the first round (13th overall) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. The 25-year-old made 21 appearances with the Dynamo from 2013-15 before being traded mid-season to the Fire in 2015.
“Jason comes to us with significant playing time in Major League Soccer, so he arrives with a considerable amount of experience,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He’s an exciting striker who is very quick. We are looking forward to working with him and helping make him a top player in the USL.”
Johnson has previously played in the USL while on loan to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds from the Dynamo in 2014. He made 13 appearances with the Riverhounds, scoring one goal and collecting one assist. Johnson has three caps for Jamaica at the full international level.
“I’m obviously very excited to join the club,” said Johnson. “Throughout my career, I have noticed it is very important to be a part of a place that you feel welcome and are willing to give your all in, and I feel that way about this organization. I am excited to get on the field and give my heart and soul for the club.”
San Antonio FC will make its debut in front of home supporters at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 9 against Swope Park Rangers, the USL affiliate of Sporting Kansas City.
Fans interested in being a part of the inaugural season can place their deposit for 2016 season tickets online at www.sanantoniofc.com or by calling 210-444-5MLS. Individual tickets will go on sale Wednesday, March 9.
